Ryde Carnival

Simply the Best! Celebrating 125 years of Carnival

Thank you for your support

Despite the hard economic times the island is suffering it has been so nice to walk around the town and chat to local business owners about the 125th Anniversary programme and our 3 day Grand Carnival Regatta and to receive their generous support by either buying a advert in the programme or offering us a prize for our Grand Draw.

Once we have visited every business in the town we will be listing you on Facebook and on our website.

Although the carnival is on for three days a year we know it helps support your businesses, so your support for us is very gratefully received because if this didn’t happen we would struggle to put the event on.

Thank you to every one for their generosity!

Just so that all Ryde Carnival’s past Queen’s and attendants are aware, we are working very hard behind the scenes to contact you all.

This isn’t any easy task as many of you have moved, got married/divorced and are no longer on the island. We will endeavour to try our best to write to or phone you for a chat.

If you feel we have missed you out for any reason please either email us via the contact page or on the RCA Past Queens/Attendants  facebook group here https://www.facebook.com/groups/17199539006 or our Ryde Carnival Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RydeCarnival  we will get back to you.

Also keep an eye out for updates in the County Press

Carnival Costume fire

Copyright José Déniz FEb 2013

This is a really sad news story from Carnival in Tenerife on 6th February.
A young woman received over 50% burns to her body when her elaborate Queens costume went up in flames trapping her in it – we do not apologise for the photograph, this is of the actual incident.

The awful thing is the presenter of the carnival queen gala was told to string it out, carry on as normal, and just say there was a technical problem with one candidate.

Our thoughts go out to her family and we hope she recovers. So when you ask members of Ryde Carnival Association why we will not allow Pyrotechnics or natural flames near carnival floats or costumes you can understand why.

The fabulous people at Windmill Farm, Upton Road, Ryde, owners of Windmill Carriages are joining the Main Carnival on Saturday 17th August 2013 to head our parade.

Steve and his family are bringing their Landau and two Shire Horses to head the Carnival Parade around the town. They will transport our Queen Victoria lookalike and our President Gloria Minghella.

I would publicly like to say a personal thank you to the Ryde Carnival Association Committee, our helpers and everyone who took part in Ryde Illuminated Carnival on 1st September.

Sorry this has been a bit late coming, but I went to a party straight after the carnival on Saturday and crawled home at 02.45am!! And then helped our Treasurer count the money with his wife Jo and my eldest Maxine.

I thought that Saturday was the most fabulous event, I couldn’t believe the numbers of people who turned up to watch the carnival, it was the largest crowded we had, had for at least 3 years.

It was lovely to see all the Queen’s Floats and I was really pleased that West Wight managed to join us. As usual Mas Fusion, San Simone, Medina Marching Band, Ventnor Comic Jazz Band, RAW Samba, and Vectis Coup of Drums put on a fabulous show. Thank you to all the wonderful families who turned up with group entries made it extra special, well done to the Barbie entry who won the Bestival Cup (Thanks Rob for choosing her, it made her day!) We had the most wonderful evening.

Thank you to all my committee members who came to help on Saturday, you all deserve a big pat on the back we couldn’t have done it without you!

Thank you to the Ryde Senior & Junior Queen’s, our Yeomen Eric & Paul and the troupe you have done Ryde proud, and I personally don’t care how many times I have to say it you were all wonderful!!

A huge thank you to Paddy McHugh and his Island Events Stewards, without whom our carnival just wouldn’t go ahead, we really couldn’t do without your hard work. Many thanks to the Royal Naval Association for allowing us to use you as stewards as well, and to the British Red Cross for providing such invaluable medical support during the event.

Also I want to thank Mark Williams, Mike Collins and DTM without your invaluable knowledge and road traffic management skills the carnival just wouldn’t happen.

Thank you all so much for your freely given time, dedication and hard work.
Thank you one and all for making Saturday night such a great event.

Kind regards
Claire

Eric one of the Ryde Carnival Floats YeomanFor a few years I have been associated with Ryde carnival and towards the end of the 2011 season, which had been so successful, I was speaking to Nickie Graham saying, “How do you follow that”?

he informed me that they had already come up with an idea for 2012, she then produced a picture of a fantastic looking crown. “The Queens Jubilee” she said. I then recalled my army days and thought that a Queens Crown is always protected by Yeoman of the Guard.

This idea I put forward to her, not realising at the time what I was saying and how hard it would be to make one. Then I said, why not have two, one at each side of the crown, the colours would look great. Wow, you could have knocked me down when Nickie agreed. By this time we became quite excited about the idea.

By instinct I said that I know the right person, a guy in our Barbershop Harmony Club called Paul Martin. Paul does so many things for charity and the Hospital, he was the perfect person to ask. When I approached Paul he said yes straight away.  Because  he is  the same height and build as myself would make us a perfect pair. I was then unaware of the many creepy thing that transpired and the coincidences that were to unfold but so delighted that he came on board..

The rest is history
