Simply the Best! Celebrating 125 years of Carnival
Ryde Carnival Association recently received this email from Tigi, who is visiting the island and remembers some of the things the association used to do years ago.
Sorry to bother you but we will be visiting the island later this year in late  August and I remember as a child living  in Ryde the carnival  week toward the end of the summer holidays… I also recall that there was a window competition as part of the carnivals week long celebrations…if I recall correctly we had to find the unusual/odd object in the window display…. some shops made is easy and others very hard but it certainly kept us kids entertained for the better part of a whole day finding everything… is this still done?  I see also that only the illuminated carnival is now held the last week of August, the others are earlier in the month… we are visiting 25th Aug to 2nd Sept so hope to catch the illuminated one on the Saturday 1st….. I remember entering it several times as a child…. must try and find the pics!!!
 Kind Regards
 Tigi
Hi Tigi,
Thank you for contacting the Carnival Association. You will be pleased to know that we do still run the ‘Window Spotting’ competition. Over the past few years, because of the small size of the Association Committee we had to make the decision to split the carnival days as we were no longer able to cope with three carnivals in a row. If you do find your photographs from when you were a child we would love to have copies for our archive as the carnival is celebrating it’s 125th Anniversary next year.
Kind regards
Claire Kay – Chair Ryde Carnival Association
